A cake recipe from a 1920 cookbook
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter (original recipe called for lard)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups sour milk
  • 1 teaspoon lemon extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (original recipe called for 1 teaspoon)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves (optional) (original recipe called for 1 teaspoon)
  • 1 cup chopped dates (original recipe called for "fruit")

Instructions

  • (Original text of instructions) Combine ingredients in the usual manner. Bake in a dripping pan in moderate oven. (My mother had handwritten in "9 X 13";
  • (As madej in 2022) Cream together the butter, sugar, and eggs until very light and fluffy. Beat in the flavorings.
  • Sift together the flour, soda, and spices. Add alternately with the sour milk to the butter mixture.
  • Fold in the dates and stir just until blended. Pour into a well-oiled 9 X 13 pan.
  • Bake at 350 degrees (325 if in a glass pan) for 30-40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool in the pan and then, as my mother suggested, "use butter icing."
